Christian Wallumrød has for many years regarded as BEEN one of the most prominent and original creators of music in Norway. Here he presents an inspired solo album That is as challenging as it is enjoyable. The album, produced by Wallumrød himself, was recorded in a number of venues and on a variety of grand pianos. He experiments with different recording techniques, overdubs, natural emas mtv resonance and editing. In terms of the music, the album Alternates successfully between inquisitive, challenging excursions and catchy, carefree, melodic pieces. The music fluctuates between very intimate and far out. "Piano Chamber" was constructed emas mtv in the studio to a greater degree than his EARLIER albums, but without losing the kind of chamber music dynamism we are accustomed two hearing from him. At the sametime he Has been Involved in Equally remarkable collaborative projects emas mtv in the group Dans les Arbres as well as with artists suchlike as Susanne Sundfør, Nils Petter Molvaer, Ricardo Villalobos & Max Loderbauer, Karl Seglem, Jan Bang, Garth Knox, DJ Strange Fruit Oslo Sinfonietta and Kim Myhr. Wallumrød won a Norwegian Grammy (Norwegian Grammy) for his previous album, emas mtv "Outstairs" (ECM, 2013), and was nominated for the Nordic Council Music Prize for the album "Fabula Suite Lugano" (ECM, 2010).
This is certainly not a typical Wallumrød disc. His latest releases are recorded with an unruly sextet where all the world's strange instruments meet in a blissful emas mtv mix of jazz and folk music and hymns. Now he is somewhere else, in a different room, he sits all alone and experimenting with music and strange noises. Piano Chamber" is recorded at three different locations, with three different pianos and using a variety of different recording techniques. In retrospect footage been processed and edited according to etiquette. The result are six relatively short pieces with a total playing time of about 40 minutes, ie a duration a bit like an old LP. What is it that we hear in Wallumrød piano chamber? First, it's just noise, seven minutes' Fahrkunst "with droning, dump motor noises shifts and settles over one another, deep, resounding, rumbling surfaces that expands, that rise and fall and eventually fizzle. Diskantdryppene fall as a kind of disorganized rain over engine roar, creating foreground and background in the room. Eventually we hear anything piano music, maybe a continuation of "Hoksang" and when dripping rain stops, arises the strange resonance sounds of grand piano strings. The last three pieces are evolutions of the patterns that are now established. Here is slowly gospel piano ("Boyd 1970," "Lassome"). Below are experiments with treble drip and resonance effects based on the chords in the previous paragraphs. And sometimes we hear sounds of objects that affects piano strings and creates effects that evoke memories of the old American avant-garde experiments with prepared piano ("School of Ecofisk"). Efforts are many different piano techniques in Wallumrød piano chamber, and there are echoes of many different musical emas mtv traditions. Yet it is also a kind of coherence through all this diversity. It's the same musical materials and the problems that crop up again and again, and each time gets processed in new ways, with tiny offsets. Some of the precursor might seem a bit private, some as diligent style exercises.
